Setting

A small village in late 17th century France. The story starts in Limbo where we meet the former wives of Bluebeard who eternally wander seeking peace after their brutal murder at his hands. Then we meet Emile, a woodsman, who professes his love for the beautiful Sophie but she sees him only as a friend and who is desperately seeking a life beyond the confines of her small village. Her mother, Mme Laurent, is keen to see her settled down, but not with Emile.

When the mysterious Count Gilles de Rais (Bluebeard) arrives he quickly ensnares Sophie. Emile recognises the danger but after a conforntation between the two is framed for the murder of a tavern girl.

Sophie is bewitched, seemingly uncaring as to Emile's plight, and ignores her sister (Angeline) and Uncle's pleas (Hugo) and agrees to marry the count.

Emile is sentenced to death but help comes in the shape of the lost souls of Bluebeard's former wives and the spirit of Colette, the girl it is claimed he murdered, who realise that Sophie is in great danger for she has decided to go into a room which Bluebeard has told her never to enter.

The show gives great opportunity for lighting and atmospheric effects and has much for the chorus to do. It can also be done on a minimalistic set with only a few props and pieces of furniture.

Choreography is not a necessity but can be done if wished. It was written for only one young principal male but if wished an alternative script is available which has Hugo as Sophie & Angeline's brother rather than Uncle.
